60%+

worked more OT than wanted

45%+

say schedule affects staying

The problem

Growing demand pushed Perry's past its Monday to Friday, 8-hour schedule, into voluntary and forced Saturday overtime. Over 60% of shift workers said they worked more overtime than they wanted, and over 45% said a better schedule would improve their chances of staying (vs. a 30% national average).

What we did

  • Kept the union at the table as a neutral advisor for all relevant discussions
  • Changed sanitation cycles and cross-trained employees to run more than one line
  • Designed 12-hour schedules with more predictable days off
  • Helped negotiate fair pay and coverage policies with the union, during COVID-19 protocols

The results

  • $1,534,000 potential capacity increase predicted from running one line 24/7
  • Reduced forced overtime labor costs
  • Broader skill set across the workforce
  • Employees who switched have no interest in going back
Our team members who have changed schedules have no interest in going back, and the ones who are awaiting changes are eager to make the change.
