Up to 40% more capacity in some areas, with schedules teams chose
Vermeer Corporation
Manufacturing
40%
potential capacity and revenue increase in some areas
5
plants plus warehouse
4x10
in a 5-day week
The problem
Vermeer's Pella campus was hit by a 2018 tornado that disrupted workflow, then by pandemic supply chain delays. It needed more predictable schedules, better retention, a broader hiring pool, and enough capacity to reduce outsourcing while flexing with customer demand.
What we did
- Reviewed hourly schedules across five production plants and a parts warehouse
- Collected anonymous input in large group sessions and narrowed choices in focus groups
- Designed complementary but different schedules by workgroup, from shorter days to longer shifts
- Handed change management to Vermeer leadership as the project progressed
The results
- Up to 40% potential increase in capacity utilization and revenue in certain areas
- More choices and flexibility for team members
- 4x10 schedule in a 5-day week giving predictable days off
- New schedules used to recruit the next generation of team members
Our purpose in engaging with Coleman Consulting Group was to truly understand what our team members appreciate and value from their work life balance. We wanted to develop a schedule for our team members that would allow them some flexibility and also predictability.
